But, is it really true?
Are there play poker and make money players out there who can do that?
Well, yes there are play poker and make money I was fortunate enough to track down one professional video poker player who agreed to an interview to give me some insight into his lifestyle and how it came about.
I ran some general video poker questions past him and it was quickly obvious that he was an extremely knowledgeable player.
He lives not far from Las Vegas with his wife and two daughters and relies solely on his gambling winnings to make his living.
Two months after our first meeting I conducted the following interview by telephone from my home in Florida.
How did you originally get involved in gambling?
I would come on the weekends and I was strictly a card counter back then.
Were you successful at it?
Chung: Not as much as I could have been, if I had really concentrated on it.
So, you were just doing this for fun and trying to make a little extra money?
Chung: Yes, and I only played single deck.
I started studying them and I began playing them on weekends too.
Did you stop playing blackjack then?
Chung: Pretty much so.
It was too hard and play poker and make money main https://slots-deposit-promocode.website/and-money/game-play-and-win-money.html was that they always shuffled up on you or they kicked you out.
Did you ever try to disguise yourself at the blackjack tables?
When those first machines came out, was it generally known that there were some machines that you could make money from?
You kind of had to hand-calculate the returns and I just made estimates.
That was really before they had computers and the software that could analyze the games.
What kind of machines were you playing back then?
Chung: Jacks or better progressives.
Were you just playing if the jackpot was above a certain amount that made it a positive expectation machine?
So, you discovered that if you only played progressive machines when the jackpot was above a certain amount, you had a theoretical advantage?
Actually, it was Stanford Wong who first started publishing books about the progressives and what levels the jackpots had to be at in order to win.
That was Professional Video Poker?
Chung: No, up until 1994, I was just playing on weekends and I would drive there from my home in California.
What happened in 1994?
Chung: Basically, the aerospace industry fell apart and my company laid off everybody.
Then you had the option of going out and finding another job?
Chung: Well, I saw it coming and I knew I was just going to play video poker full time as soon as I was laid off.
When the big change came, what happened?
Did you pack up and move to Las Vegas?
The whole family: my wife and two daughters.
When I first moved here I lived right next to the Santa Fe Hotel in North Las Vegas.
We only moved out here to our new home about a year ago.
Were you successful right away?
Did you ever have a year when you lost money?
Chung: No, never even had a month.
Is this a full-time a job for you?
How much time do you put in?
Chung: 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Chung: Well, I can vary that however I want, depending on the conditions.
If I find an especially good machine I will play more.
Do you work on the weekends?
How do you find out about these special promotions?
Chung: Newspaper ads, or friends of mine.
We have a message beeper network where we leave messages for each other about what the best plays are and everything.
So there are other people who do this besides yourself?
Chung: Yes, I would say, in Nevada, maybe 25 people do this full-time for a living and maybe another couple hundred part-time.
Are there professional video poker players in other states?
Besides Las Vegas are there other places to play professionally?
read more, as far as you know, the only people doing this are the ones around Las Vegas?
Chung: Yes, but there are also some who do it by traveling to a few other good spots around the country.
What is a typical day like for you?
Where do you go to play?
Chung: Right now I have three places that I go to where the best machines are.
These are machines that return more than 100%?
Those are the only machines you play?
Chung: Well, right now, yes.
And you find out about those specials by either reading the newspaper or from your friends?
Chung: Yes, and sometimes the casino will also send you monthly newsletters that tell you about these specials.
On quarters or dollars?
So you would prefer to play quarter machines?
Unless you find an exceptional play on a dollar machine, which is very unlikely.
If you found a quarter machine with a 102% payback, and you also found that same machine at the dollar level, would youstill prefer to play the quarter machine?
But, you also have the additional problem with the dollar machines that play poker and make money get tax forms on the royal flushes and you have to report that to the What is us money made out of />Plus, you need a lot larger bankroll to play the higher machine.
Chung: Yes, I would.
But do you know ahead of time when you are going to these places that there is good video poker there?
Chung: Yes, I pretty much know ahead of time before I go.
And how do you find that out?
Right now Bettendorf, Iowa and Kansas City, Missouri are the only places that have enough to make it worth traveling to.
One has blackjack machines and the other has video poker.
How often do you leave Las Vegas to travel around the country?
Is there a certain kind of machine that opened up in Las Vegas that made it better?
There are certain types of games now.
Chung: There are two games actually.
I can mention one because everybody knows about it.
There are three or four places here play poker and make money have them with full-pay jokers.
How much time did you spend outside of Las Vegas last year?
Chung: Last year was virtually 11 months out of 12.
It was that bad?
What do you play when you go to these other places?
Chung: In Kansas City I played All American video poker.
That was a 103% game.
Are those machines still around?
What was the big play poker and make money on those Williams blackjack machines?
They allowed early surrender?
Chung: Yes, it was a single-deck game with early surrender and doubling only allowed on 10 or 11.
That makes it a 100.
Could you double after a split?
Dealer stood on soft 17.
And if you got six cards it was an automatic winner.
The early surrender was the big difference.
You could surrender on your first two cards against a 10 or an ace.
So, even if the dealer had a blackjack, you still got half your bet back.
S o you did well on those machines?
Chung: Well, eventually, just by the amount of play poker and make money they lose.
Finally, they have to come to the conclusion, click to see more they lose a couple of hundred thousand dollars, that the company was wrong.
You must have bad days.
Chung: Last year there were 262 winning days and 58 losing days.
So you keep a log every day?
Chung: Oh, probably 3, 4 or 5 days.
Do you put a limit on your losses?
Chung: No, I just play for as many hours as I want to play.
Chung: Yes, for 8 hours or so.
So, if you started playing at 9 a.
Seven in one day?
Chung: Yes, that was unusual.
Chung: Well, not counting all the time I was playing the blackjack machines, probably about two play poker and make money />How many hands do you play an hour?
Chung: On one machine about 1,000; two machines about 1,400.
You have to hit the keys immediately.
It has to be automatic.
Does your wife have any problems with your gambling for a living?
Chung: No, actually she plays with me sometimes.
Does she want to become a professional?
How old are your kids?
Chung: One is 20 and the other is 17.
Do either of them have an inclination to gamble?
Do you think she might want to become a professional player?
But, I know she has enough of a mathematical inclination, so she might.
As noted previously, this interview was originally done by telephone in January 1999.
I followed up with Chung again in late August and he was back in the Midwest.
Was he one of those people?

You can, but first consider these three questions.
Many different paths carry first-timers to the poker table.
Some come to poker via other card games, while others find poker after having sampled other gambling games in the casino such as blackjack, craps, or roulette.
Sports bettors also sometimes wander from the sportsbook over to the poker room and find themselves in a game — and perhaps find poker intriguing thanks to the sports-resembling competition the game provides.
Those who stick with the game do so for many reasons as well, although most are motivated by the prospect of making a profit at poker.
Especially those who win at first — which happens quite a lot — will keep playing to try to win more, with some even being encouraged to think about winning a lot more and perhaps even to become professional poker players.
But while poker is a game that rewards skill, luck plays a role, too.
Those who initially win at poker likely do so in part because of getting dealt good cards, hitting draws when they need to and avoiding others' hitting theirs.
Only those who take some time to and gain experience are usually able to sustain that success over longer periods.
In other words, the short answer to the question "Can I make money playing poker?
The fact is, while it's certainly possible to win at a single cash game session or go deep and win a lot in a single tournament, only a small percentage of players remain profitable long term, and invariably those play poker and make money are better skilled than those who do not.
Let's look a little more closely at the question, however, by asking a few other questions addressing factors that will affect the likelihood of your being able to make money at poker as well as how much play poker and make money you can make.
What is your win rate?
The generic term "win rate" is used to refer to how much someone is winning at poker over a given period of time or hands played, although in truth the term is also used when referring to how much a player is losing, too.
A player with a positive win rate is profiting at poker while a player with a negative win rate is not.
In cash games, a win rate is usually expressed as the amount won per hour or 100 hands.
In no-limit hold'em or pot-limit Omaha, the unit of measurement is often converted to big blinds — e.
Meanwhile in limit hold'em, stud games, and others with fixed-limit betting the amount won is usually measured by the number of "big bets" it represents.
Obviously if your win rate or ROI is negative, you aren't making money playing poker.
But even if you enjoy play poker and make money positive win rate or ROI, you need to consider other expenses related to playing poker and look at whether or not your winnings are exceeding them.
The biggest point to take away here is that if you are interested in making money at poker and don't keep track of your wins and losses, start doing so right now.
Find out what your win rate play poker and make money ROI is, take into account other possible expenses associated with playing poker, then you'll see whether or not you are making money at poker.
You'll also likely be encouraged to sharpen your study of the game in order to try to increase your profit if you're winning or to become profitable if you're losing.
How much do you play?
Another question to ask when addressing the larger question of whether or not you can make money playing poker is to consider just how much poker you're playing.
If you're strictly a recreational player who only joins a home game once per week or who for an hour or two here and there, you can still win at poker but only a limited amount.
Also, those who play poker only sparingly aren't necessarily gaining experience and knowledge that will help them build their skills and win more consistently.
A number of serious players who put in a lot of "volume" at the tables are able to increase their profit steadily even if their win rates are somewhat low.
Most tend to consider cash games a more reliable way to make money at poker given the higher of poker tournaments.
If you think about it, in most poker tournaments only the top 10 or 15 percent of finishers enjoy any profit at all, so it logically follows that the majority of players finish out of the money most of the time they play.
Really only the most successful tournament players are able to cash enough to sustain an ROI as high as 10 or 20 percent or morewith most who are profitable sitting in the 5-10 percent range.
That means when playing tournaments even good players lose money more often than they win money.
But when they win they win enough to more than make up for the losses, sometimes hitting especially big scores when finishing at a final table or winning the entire tournament and getting back 10, 20, 50, or even 100 times the buy-in.
Cash games tend article source be less volatile that way, although even there good players will frequently have losing sessions.
They may even have more losing sessions than winning ones, although they manage to enjoy larger profits than losses, generally speaking, and thus have positive win rates.
Even so, if you don'tyou can experience one very bad cash game session and lose everything you've won and then some.
Once you've play poker and make money out your win rate, you can think about how much you need to play in order to make a desired amount over a given period of time.
You should also try to gauge what is the best amount of time to play poker for you in order to increase your chances of remaining profitable.
Some are better of playing, say, only 10-20 hours per week than 40-50 hours per week, or shorter sessions instead of long ones, because they have trouble focusing and thus playing well over longer periods.
Meanwhile others can put in those extra hours and not suffer as a result.
What stakes are you playing and are article source right for you?
Probably the most important question to answer when delving more deeply into whether or not you can make money at poker is to look at the stakes for which you are playing.
And — importantly — whether you are choosing well when deciding upon your stakes and sitting down in games in which you can win cricket and money win consistently.
One common misconception among new players is that the best way to win more money at poker is to play for higher stakes.
Games of different stakes attract differently skilled players.
While the lowest stakes games almost always include the least-skilled and least-experienced, they attract strong players sometimes, too.
Similarly, many of the best players can be found in the higher stakes games, but there also will inexperienced or poor players sometimes sitting around the table.
On average, though, the higher the stakes the tougher the games.
That's one reason to be realistic about moving up in stakes in poker — even if you're great and better than most in the games, you aren't going to win at the same rate you did at the lower stakes.
But you also need to be practical about your own ability as a poker player and recognize when the competition is too tough to beat.
As you move around and test out which stakes work for you, continue keeping accurate records and note at which stakes for cash games or buy-ins for tournaments you are winning most consistently, and where you are winning less or losing.
Sometimes you might find it hard to win in a lower stakes game than in one a notch or two above, simply because of your particular skill set and how well read more respond to the styles and tendencies of others.
More often, though, there will be a stakes "threshold" of sorts above which you might take shots now and then but probably shouldn't go on a regular basis.
In any case, be honest with yourself and smart with your bankroll, and your chances of making money at poker will increase as a result.

But while poker is a game that rewards skill, luck plays play poker and make money role, too.
The fact is, while it's certainly possible to win at a single cash game session or go deep and win a lot in a single tournament, only a small percentage of players remain profitable long term, and invariably those players are better skilled than those who do not.
Let's look a little more closely at the question, however, by asking a few other questions addressing factors that will affect the likelihood of your being able to make money at poker as well as how much money you can make.
What play poker and make money your win rate?
But even if you enjoy a positive win rate or ROI, you need to consider other expenses related to playing poker and look at whether or not your winnings are exceeding them.
The biggest point to take away here is that if you are interested in making money at poker and don't keep track of your wins and losses, start doing so right now.
Find out what your win rate or ROI is, take into account other possible expenses associated with playing poker, then you'll see whether or not you are making money at poker.
You'll also likely be encouraged to sharpen your study of the game in order to try to increase your profit if you're winning or to become profitable if you're losing.
How much do you play?
Another question to ask when addressing the larger question of whether or not you can make money playing poker is to consider just how much poker you're playing.
If you're strictly a recreational player who only joins a home game this web page per week or who for an hour or two here and there, you can still win at poker but only a limited amount.
Really only the most successful tournament players are able to cash enough to sustain an ROI as high as 10 or 20 percent or morewith most who are learn more here sitting in the 5-10 percent range.
That means when playing tournaments even good players lose money more often than they win money.
But when they win they win enough to more than make up for the losses, sometimes hitting especially big scores when finishing at a final table or winning the entire tournament and getting back 10, 20, 50, or even 100 times the buy-in.
Cash games tend to be less volatile that way, although even there good players will frequently have losing sessions.
They may even have more losing sessions than winning ones, although they manage to enjoy larger profits than losses, generally speaking, and thus have positive win rates.
Even so, if you don'tyou can experience one very bad cash game session and lose everything you've won and then some.
Once you've figured out your win rate, you can think about how much you need to play in order to make a desired amount over a given period of time.
What play poker and make money are you playing and are they right for you?
Probably the most important question to answer when delving more deeply into whether or not you can make money at poker is to look at the stakes for which you are playing.
And — importantly — whether you are choosing well when deciding upon your stakes and sitting down play poker and make money games in which you can win and win consistently.
Sometimes you might find it hard to win in a lower stakes game than in one a notch or two above, simply because of your particular skill set and how well you respond to the styles and tendencies of others.
More often, though, there will be a stakes "threshold" of sorts above which you might take shots now and then but probably shouldn't go on a regular basis.
In any case, be honest with yourself and smart with your bankroll, and your chances of making money at poker will increase as a result.
