The principle which allows the Antikythera Mechanism to compute astronomical cycles lies in the function of its interlocking gears.
The multiplication and division of whole numbers can be processed with gears of varying tooth counts.
For example, a gear with 20 teeth interlocked with a 10-tooth gear will cause the 10-tooth gear to rotate at twice the speed of the 20-tooth gear.
Furthermore, multiple gears connected on the same axle allows for the creation of gear trains and complex gearing ratios which drive all the pointers on the mechanism.
The diagram below details the gearing configuration of the mechanism where the tooth count of each gear is shown at the joining of its neighbouring gear.
The resulting speed of each pointer is a function of the Solar pointer and therefore every gear train begins with the 64-tooth gear shaded in grey.
Metonic Pointer The Metonic calendar lasts 19 years and so 19 turns of the Solar pointer completes one Metonic cycle.
The Metonic dial itself consists of a spiral of 5 turns and therefore the Metonic pointer is required to rotate 5 times in each Metonic cycle.
A groove following the spiral leads the metonic pointer through to the end of the spiral which would then need to be reset to the original position by the user of the device.
This also represents the number of turns of the Solar pointer, and so becomes the antikythera mechanism pin and slot of the gearing ratio.

The sun pointer then determines the date on the Egyptian calendar dial.
